Honda National Development Programme

Drees & Sommer has been supporting Honda UK since 2008 with their national brand roll-out, and infrastructure upgrades. This is included a programme of car showrooms nationwide, completing over 25 dealerships; all within programme and budget. We have also supported the decarbonisation of their UK portfolio, green energy funding and the installation of a PV array to their national logistics hub.

The buildings delivered the Honda Corporate Identity in full and, in order to achieve the planning approval, incorporated air source heat pumps providing heating and cooling to under floor pipework in the showroom. PV arrays were included to further promote sustainability. We have since delivered Honda’s UK R&D facility for aerodynamic and electrical engineering and their F1 team.

Swansway Honda traded from existing premises on Chester Road utilising a building which was becoming increasingly less efficient, not only in terms of internal sales and servicing, but also in safe and efficient traffic management in and around the site. It therefore became apparent that the premises had reasonably outgrown their usefulness and any further refurbishment or extensions were not at all feasible and it was decided that the only practical and economic solution would be to demolish and rebuild on the same site.

The dealership therefore decanted the sales and servicing facilities into two adjacent properties and Drees & Sommer managed this temporary move to ensure that the dealership experienced as little interruption to their business as possible.

A new dealership which was predominantly single storey of some 1,300m2 was erected on the site. Not only did the new dealership fully embrace the current Honda corporate identity but Honda also took the opportunity to install photo-voltaic panels on the roof to give them the benefit of the government’s Feed-In Tariff.

This scheme to install solar PV panels was undertaken under a tight programme in order to beat the government’s tariff cuts and maximise the returns for the Client.

Drees & Sommer managed the programme delivery and other considerations including the roof loading and maintaining the roof guarantee.

The roof fixing system chosen was a light weight construction fixed directly to the roof membrane without any ballast. The system was compatible and bonded by the roofing contractor associated with the original roof covering preserving the roof guarantee.
