Aquinas College

Project details:

New build sixth form college on two and three floors together with associated external works including full size Multi Use Games Area. The construction works were procured via a Two Stage Design and Build process, which allowed early contractor involvement in design/programme development and resulted in a Guarantee Maximum Price within the Learning and Skills Council cost parameters. The LSC publicly praised the project team for control of costs during this process. AA Projects provided strategic management advice, project management, quantity surveying and building surveying and CDM Coordinator services on the project.


Barnsley CollegeClient:Barnsley College

Project details:

The project involved the construction of a new main teaching facility comprising one block of 5 and 7 storeys and one block of 9 storeys with a central covered atrium linking the two blocks. In addition the rear half of the site has been converted into an Urban Park as both a college and public space which is to be used for outdoor events allied to the College curriculum.


Blackpool & the Fylde College

Project details:

The 2,000m² Central Hub Building has transformed the campus. This new build project is the first educational scheme in the North West to be accredited BREEAM Excellent for both Design/Procurement and Post Construction stages and includes a reception, refectory, kitchen and learning resource centre/library/social learning area together with office/administration and staff areas. The scheme also included refurbishment works to an existing building that composed the creating of an art gallery and impressive entrance vestibule, remodelling classroom, replacement of windows and extension and re-cladding of the theatre.


Bournville College

Project details:

Relocation of the existing college to Longbridge, this 23,500m² development of iconic design is the gateway to South Birmingham and will trigger the regeneration of Longbridge with the creation of a new town centre.  The project value is in excess of £80M with a five storey element providing the main teaching and learning space with a state of the art construction centre, motor vehicle centre, 6 court sports hall and business development and conference suite.


Burnley College

Project details:

New College Campus on brownfield site attracting a mix of NWDA, LSC and HEFCE funding. The development comprises of 20,800m2 of accommodation for Burnley College and 4,800m2 for the UCLan Centre. The new premises include a main College Facility consisting of three linked blocks of buildings the highest being five-storey, that are stepped in storey levels to follow the existing topography. The site was a former Paper Mill and Council Works Depot and is adjacent to a former mains gas holder, de-commissioned as part of the Scheme. The project was successfully completed on programme and budget.


Furness College

Project details:

New build Further Education College on 4 floors together with associated external works including Multi Use Games Area. The new building will be built on the existing site, requiring temporary relocation of existing workshops. Additional funding has been secured from the NWDA create a shared Higher Education space with University of Cumbria within the new building. AA Projects is providing strategic management advice, project management, quantity surveying and building surveying and CDM Coordinator services on the project.


Hartlepool College

Project details:

The project comprises the design and construction of a new College Building over three and four storeys. The project includes the provision of associated external works, including new service supplies, car parking, and soft and hard landscaping and the demolition of redundant buildings. The project requires the supply and fit out of temporary accommodation to allow the College to decant from some of the existing facilities in order to clear the area for the main teaching block to commence construction.

Project details:

The new College development fills a dominant site with a large curved brick façade which encloses a landscaped courtyard providing a safe collegiate environment for the 16-18 year old students. The building is being constructed with an in-situ concrete frame with exposed concrete ceilings in classrooms to aid the benefits of thermal mass and contribute to the low energy nature of the building. AA Projects undertook an overall project management role for the client including IT, FF&E and decant, and other Client side activities. The project has recently won 2 awards; RIBA Award and the RIBA / LSC Further Education Building Design Excellence Award.


Kirklees College

Project details:

Construction of a new multi storey building consisting of two linked blocks set into a sloping site which forms part of the new proposed Waterfront Quarter development close to the centre of Huddersfield. The two linked blocks consist of a seven storey western block consisting of atrium, Learning Resource Centre, restaurant, bistro, refectory and classrooms which is linked to the eastern block of nine storeys which houses foundation, hair and beauty, science and admin.


Liverpool Community College

Project details:

AA Projects has worked closely with Liverpool Community College on their Estate Rationalisation project which was an early pathfinder project. This project has comprised £105 million of multi phased capital works and numerous different forms of procurement, which required a clear understanding of the LSC funding criteria in order to obtain approval to each Business Case. Additional funding attained English Partnerships and Government Office North West.


Loreto Sixth Form College

Project details:

AA Projects was appointed to assist with the phased delivery Loreto College’s Estates Strategy and have maintained a strong and continuous working relationship with the College for over nine years. A key driver for the College was the continued safe operation of college buildings and delivery of its highly acclaimed curriculum. The Campus redevelopment has been undertaken under four major phases of works with the final phase being recently completed. The project has received “Excellent” accreditation from the BRE.


Mid Cheshire College

Project details:

The development comprises the Design and Construction of a new 3400m² of new education accommodation on an existing brownfield site situated at the east of Winsford town centre within the valley of the River Weaver along with associated external and infrastructure works. The new accommodation will include hair & beauty accommodation, exhibition space, café and welfare provision, staff and ancillary accommodation, general teaching rooms, Learning Resource Centre and IT rooms.


Rochdale Sixth Form College

Project details:

AA Projects was successful in winning a LSC competition to develop a new incorporated sixth form college for the Rochdale Education Partnership.  As a truly brand new college there was no staff or students from whom to take a brief, no legacy equipment to decant and the LSC was acting as the contracting authority.  The works included the construction of some 8,000m² of accommodation on the bank of the river Roch.  The site is physically constrained on all sides by roads and a river with particular issues associated with its industrial legacy and on a flood plain.  There are also a number of different political interests to align and satisfy as well as many legal issues not least land transfer.


Sir John Deane’s College

Project details:

The project involves the demolition and replacement of over 8,000m² of accommodation and refurbishment of 2,000m² to provide a new facility along an enclosed central street to accommodate all learning and administrative requirements. Phase III is the refurbishment of the Grade 2 listed hall as refectory and social spaces. Particular challenges include delivering 3 phases of construction whilst maintaining “business as usual” for the College. The project features a number of innovative sustainable measures and is on target to achieve BREEAM Excellent. AA Projects provide all management disciplines including Strategic Consultancy, Project Management, Quantity Surveying and CDM/Health and Safety.


West Cheshire College

Project details:

Design and construction of a new vocational campus of 20,500m² across five floors split between 16,410m² of new build, 4,000m² of retained and refurbished vocational space and a 360m² existing nursery centre. The new build element of the scheme will feature an L shaped block, meeting at a central rotunda glass atrium style core.   This "drum" atrium will feature a ramp from first to fifth floor.
