Flagship new building for the University of Manchester at the heart of the Campus. Project comprised 1000 seat Conference Hall / Lecture Theatre, Kitchen / Dining facility for 1000 people, Seminar / Teaching rooms, School of Nursing / Faculty of Health Studies / Institute of Health, Student Services Centre and 300 student flats. The project included the demolition of a 1960’s twenty storey building and many significant site constraints. Construction activities were required to be undertaken adjacent to occupied University buildings, including the main Computer Centre.

Project:Higher Education Hub Building

Project details:
The Central Hub Building total area is 2,000m² and comprises the following core elements: reception, refectory, kitchen and learning resource centre/library/social learning area together with office/administration and staff areas. The project has transformed the campus by linking all buildings with high quality external works. The new build project is the first educational scheme in the North West to be accredited BREEAM Excellent for both Design/Procurement and Post Construction stages. The scheme also included refurbishment works to an existing building that composed the creating of an art gallery and impressive entrance vestibule, remodelling classroom, replacement of windows and extension and re-cladding of the theatre.

Project:ISS Building

Project details:
The ISS Building provides a data centre together with office accommodation to house staff from the Information and Support Systems department in a central facility. The development is constructed over three storeys comprising approximately 2,500 m2 internal floor area together with a separate external services compound housing substation, generator and chillers. The ISS Building won the BCO Award for best Corporate Workspace and has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Project details:
Demolition of redundant buildings and design/construction of new Law School. The building comprises of a 200 seat lecture theatre, seminar rooms, academic offices and a law library. Sustainability was central to the design which helped to create a lower carbon building with air leakage rates and U Values exceeding Building Regulation standards by 50%. The flexible and adaptable design provides a One Stop Shop facility meeting the University's needs present and future. The building was shortlisted for the 2008 Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors North West Awards in the Design and Innovation category.

Project:Science and Technology Centre

Project details:
The provision of a new Science and Technology Centre within the Stoke Campus and part of a £240 million regeneration of the University Quarter. The new Centre will provide 10,400m² of state of the art laboratories for forensic science, renewable energy and biomechanical labs for the use of the University and its partners. The building will be BREEAM ‘excellent’ and include renewable energy elements.

Project:Student and Administration Services Building

Project details:
The Student and Administration Services building is a signature building framing the entrance to the University Campus within the centre of Newcastle. It will serve the Student Support Services and Executive Office. The structure will comprise reinforced concrete with a steel framed 4 storey atrium (roof and external walls). The frontage will be the threshold of the University combining a mixture of stone and glass with solar shading panels to the Barras Bridge elevation. This is a complex project on a restricted site in terms of space, access and vehicular movement in the middle of a busy University next to a main arterial road.

Project:Learning Commons Project

The Learning Commons will provide a Hub for advanced learning technologies and learning spaces, designed to meet the needs of modern students through a variety of technology rich tools, resources and services. The design comprises two thirds retention of an existing concrete structural frame, and one third new build. The reuse of the existing frame helps with the project’s sustainable credentials. The ambition for the new facility is to implement a ‘social information hub’ to accommodate flexible learning styles. The building will not only be unique visually, but also in the way in which it operates, offering a comprehensive suite of media facilities and encouraging creativity and collaboration through social learning. The building utilises a number of smaller low-impact design features which all contribute to a collectively sustainable building.

Project details:
Creation of new premises for the Faculty of Business & Law and the Screen Academy for the Faculty of Media, Arts & Social Science. The new Building, to be built on the site of an existing tower block, will be a key gateway to the City Centre Knowledge Quarter. The Faculty of Business and Law has over 4500 students and 220 academic and support staff and includes a School of Law, Liverpool Business School, the European Centre for Corporate Governance, Public Policy Institute and Professional Centre. The Screen School, established in 2007 embraces all forms of digital media, offering practice-based education as well as critical and historical perspectives on all aspects of media including broadcast, film and interactive media.

Project details:
The project comprised the refurbishment of a former student residence building into high quality teaching and office space. The scheme incorporates a new widened entrance, breakout areas, improved vertical and horizontal circulation and WC facilities, a landscaped courtyard and extensive works to the building envelope including replacement of all windows, re-roofing and façade repairs. The project also secured BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.

Project:Sutherland Building

Project details:
Northumbria University is to relocate the university administration department to the Sutherland building. The Sutherland building is to be refurbished to improve the existing facilities within the building to accommodate the administration department. The works are to include total M&E refurbishment, re modelling of the existing office layout, demolition of identified structural walls, new data links, new welfare facilities, new lifts, installation of general and fire alarms and a new kitchen to great hall. AA Projects is involved in design advice to improve the existing arrangements for future maintenance of the building by the university’s estates department.
