Project: Cystic Fibrosis Unit

  Project details:

Procured through the P21 process and using the NEC contract, the project comprised the design, supply and refurbishment of existing accommodation on the second floor of the Centre for Biomedical Research building at the Northern General Hospital to provide a new 910m² cystic fibrosis unit. Challenges included working on the second floor above the operational Research Unit and the delivery of the scheme to a restricted budget and challenging overall timescale. The use of a roof mounted prefabricated plant room allowed the reduction of the overall on site construction period. This allowed the majority of mechanical and electrical plant to be installed in a factory controlled environment off site. Full height wall murals were installed in each of the bedrooms together with wall mounted flat screen televisions, PC's and computer games consoles to improve patient care during treatment.

Project: Laboratory Rationalisation

  Project details:

Procured through P21 and using the NEC contract, this project brings together the Laboratory Medicine Units of the Trust that are currently located on both the Northern and Central campuses. Some key elements will remain at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to link to the specialist departments there and at the Jessop Women's Hospital. The rest of the units including Hisopathology, Immunology, Haemotology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry and NEQAS testing labs will be brought together on the Northern campus in a purpose-built facility incuding a new automated lab system.

Project: Cobridge Community Health Centre

  Project details:

Commissioned by NHS Stoke on Trent, this scheme is part of NHS Stoke on Trent's commitment to improving access to Primary Care and the state-of-the-art facilities will serve a population of up to 100,000 patients in the local area. The facility will bring three GP practices together and a range of additional health services onto one site including X rays, a chest clinic and a district nursing team. Facilities include: relocation of three GP surgeries, podiatry, physiotherapy, district nursing, health visiting, school nursing, asylum seeker health team, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, contraception and sexual health services, sexual assault referral centre and blood tests.

Project: Stereotactic Radiosurgery Upgrade and Expension

  Project details:

Procured through the P21 process and using the NEC contract, the project comprised the design, supply and construction of a new two bunker Gamma Knife facility for the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Department within the existing A floor of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The option study undertaken as part of the business case process identified the most beneficial option being to install a new machine in a new facility and provide an additional bunker to cater for the future expansion, thus reducing treatment times and increasing patient throughput. Key challenges included working within an operational hospital environment and extremely restricted access to the site.


The Hewitt Centre

Project: Hanley Health and Wellbeing Centre

Project details:

The project included the design, refurbishment and fitting out of existing 1901 retail premises on the main street of Hanley town centre to establish a GP led Health Centre open for 12 hours a day, every day of the week. Site works were undertaken over a sixteen week construction period, inclusive of asbestos removal, allowing the centre to open on time in December 2009. Accommodation includes five examination/treatment rooms, two phlebotomy rooms, one multi purpose room, one training/meeting room/library and one staff common room.

Project details:

The new facility will provide the largest assisted conception unit in Europe, allowing 1,500 patients to be seen each year with the potential for further expansion to 2,000. The sensitive nature of the works required that the two storey extension was constructed above an existing ground floor service corridor and the remodelling element of works carried out immediately adjacent to operating theatres and ward areas. The new facilities also fully comply with HFEA guidelines and the EU Cells and Tissue Directive as well as allowing capability for future expansion and development. AA Projects worked closely with the HFEA and the client to assist in gaining new licensing for the premises.


General Hospital Critical Care Unit

Project details:

Procured via the P21 process and using the NEC contract, the project encompassed the re-development of the Northern General Hospital campus providing a new Therapy Services outpatients department and a new state of the art 36-bed two storey Critical Care Unit. The new unit provides 18 Level 3 ITU beds and 18 Level 2 HDU beds and associated ancillary and teaching accommodation within a total floor plan of 3,000m².The total programme value of £21m had funding made available through the Foundation Trust Financing Facility, the first project to be funded via the new facility.


Northern General Hospital Renal Expansion

Project details:

An expansion of the Renal Care Unit, procured via the P21 process and using the NEC contract, involving a new build wing to house a renal outpatients facility, consulting rooms, research area for Sheffield University and medical records storage. Upon completion of the new build element and decant into the building, a refurbishment of two floors of the Sheffield Kidney Institute was undertaken to create new dialysis wards and minor alterations and refurbishment of a further two associated wards in an adjacent Victorian building.


Northern General Hospital Renal Expansion Energy Review

Project details:

The Trust’s annual energy budget is approximately £14 million with the probability that this will increase in years to come due to energy price rises. The project, procured via the P21 process and using the NEC contract, is to review the Trust’s estate with regard to energy usage and find ways to reduce the amount of energy used. The immediate actions include installing voltage optimisation and power factor correction equipment and whilst these initial elements are being undertaken, a more strategic review of the heating systems is being considered including replacement of the steam boiler plant with a combined cooling, heat and power system.

Project details:

AA Projects has been appointed to the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust framework to provide option appraisal and costed feasibility studies to support business case development, together with assistance in design, costing and scheme management for projects being undertaken by the Trust. Five refurbishment schemes are being undertaken in the region.


The Private Patient’s Unit

Project details:

Remodelling of an existing ward to provide a high quality unit for private patients. The facility has been accredited by BUPA and has attracted private consultants to the hospital to carry out gynaecological, and plastics procedures, as well as minor surgeries. The project was completed within a live hospital environment. Access to the adjacent wards was maintained throughout the project by working closely with the Trust to prevent any breaches of Infection Control guidelines.

Project details:

New build extension to accommodate specialist research laboratories, office accommodation, and meeting rooms. The project has been developed with the Trust and Liverpool University to provide a joint venture research facility. The completed facility contains a large suite of dedicated research laboratories accommodating the specialist requirements of focused areas such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Confocal Microscopy. The Centre for Better Births provides unrivalled clinical and midwifery care in the largest women’s hospital in Europe, delivering more than 8,000 babies each year.
