Liverpool Community College has received the keys to its new £35m building the ‘Learning Exchange’. The keys for the flagship building were presented to the college Principal, Maureen Mellor MBE and the newly appointed Principal Elaine Bowker, who is due to take up her new position on 1st June 2011.
The principal and chair of governors were joined by other members of the construction and design teams, including, AA Projects; Ellis Williams Architects and Turner Townsend.
AA Projects has worked with the College on their estates programme for over 11 years and were once again pleased to play a key part in the delivery of this prestigious project, undertaking the roles of Project Manager, Building Surveyor, CDM-C and Employer’s Agent.
Paul Allen, Managing Director of AA Projects, said, ‘It gives me great pleasure to be a part of the key handover ceremony today, as we move closer to the opening of another flagship building for the College.’
Vivienne Tyler, chair of governors, thanked the construction and design teams: ‘for creating a landmark building that will meet the current and future needs of our students’.
The £35 million building will provide Liverpool Community College students from across the city campus with a central resource that includes state of the art: IT; sports; recreational; and enrichment facilities.
Principal, Maureen Mellor, added: “This building is a culmination of aspiration and ambition and to see it finally completed is very special. It will provide our students with a stimulating place in which to learn and a technologically sophisticated environment that will complement quality teaching.”
The ‘Learning Exchange’, which is based on Roscoe Street, is positioned in the heart of the college’s campus and will become the hub of college life at Liverpool Community College. The building, which was commissioned and constructed as part of the college’s vision to embrace new technology, will aim to harness the power of new innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
The ‘Learning Exchange’ will combine state of the art learning environments with a range of well being and recreational facilities. It will also provide essential learning and support services for students located in the three city centre based campuses – Arts Centre, Duke Street and Clarence Street.
