BREEAM Assessments

Background

Sustainable construction is increasingly becoming important and a BREEAM assessment is recognised as the measure of best practise in environmental design and management.

The Government is keen to ensure that sustainability is at the top of the agenda for all those involved in construction and many public buildings including educational institutions, hospitals and offices are required to achieve a particular BREEAM standard as a condition of funding. Some local authorities are also seeking to make achieving a certain standard a planning condition.

What is BREEAM?

BREEAM is a tool that can be applied at different stages of a building’s development from initial conception through to completion and occupancy.
The scope of these assessments is far reaching in terms of the overall sustainability of the development.

The assessment normally covers the following individual sections:

  • Management
  •  Transport
  • Health and Well-Being
  •  Materials
  • Energy
  •  Land use & Ecology
  •  Water
  •  Polution

Points are allocated to each section against a set of criteria established by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The total number of points achieved results in an official BREEAM performance standard being allocated (Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding).
