Whitworth Art Gallery
This project involved a high profile new build extension and internal refurbishment of the Grade 2 listed gallery on Oxford Road in Manchester, a development that has transformed the gallery. At the heart of the project, an elegant 21st-century extension has doubled the size of the gallery’s public space. The creation of an art garden and new main entrance allows visitors to be welcomed directly from Whitworth Park. A new North Wing has embraced the park, housing a Landscape Gallery where Whitworth’s internationally important artworks are displayed. Alongside this is the new Study Centre where visitors of all ages can explore and learn about these wonderful collections.
A promenade gallery now leads to the South Wing, comprising of a new café and a learning studio opening into the art garden. Exhibition spaces on the first floor have been revitalised, and the Edwardian staircases opened up to create a spectacular prelude to the Grand Hall. Three large barrel ceiling exhibition galleries have also increased the gallery space, including new windows that open up views across Whitworth Park. The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded £8 million to the development.
