Kingswood Outdoor Education and Activity Centres

On the site of the former Earth Centre in Doncaster, AA Projects provided a full range of services in the delivery of a new outdoor activity centre for Kingswood. The Dearne Valley Centre was the ninth UK facility for Kingswood who operate outdoor activity centres across the UK for school residential trips and summer camps.

The project incorporated the construction of a new two-storey timber framed residential unit. The existing buildings are being adapted to suit the centre’s new requirements and the former Planet Earth Galleries have been converted in to a multi-purpose sports hall complete with climbing walls and space for fencing, archery, basketball and 5-a-side football among other indoor activities. The remainder of the Planet Earth Galleries building has been converted into a laser quest zone, classrooms, open plan offices, a teacher’s retreat, souvenir and snack shop as well as the main reception. Around the 50 acre site are various outdoor activities and team building challenges, including a zip line, high ropes challenge and low ropes challenge course and an archery zone.

The new facilities have been built on the site of a former South Yorkshire colliery. The Earth Centre, a landmark millennium project, opened on the site in 1999 as an ecological visitor attraction but was forced to close some five years later due to inadequate visitor numbers. The new Kingswood activity centre will rejuvenate this area, providing outstanding outdoor activities and residential facilities for school children.
