Transport for Greater Manchester - Manchester Airport Rail Station
AA Projects was involved in this strategic joint venture contract between Transport for Greater Manchester, Network Rail and Manchester Airport to provide a third platform at Manchester Airport rail station. The development was seen as a key element in the implementation of the revised West Coast Mainline timetables.
The works included a new eight car length platform in a widened cutting supported by diaphragm retaining walls. New overhead line electrification, new track and junction, new curved platform canopies with lighting, CCTV, public address and passenger information screens, heated and illuminated passenger waiting room, associated platform furniture, extensive landscaping and new platform fire escapes.
To facilitate the construction, the roads around the station were realigned and widened to allow the new trackbed to be laid. The main gas, water, electrical and telecommunications feeds were diverted temporarily during the bridgeworks to ensure the airport remained fully functional.
