Newcastle City Council - Newcastle City Libraries
Described as one of "the most significant public libraries between Leeds and Edinburgh", this six storey building contains a marble-floored atrium, viewing platform, a 185 seat performance space, café and exhibition space. The building was designed with many environmentally friendly features and includes improvements to Princess Square to create a vibrant urban space. AA Projects supported Newcastle City Council with the scheme which started with the demolition and rebuilding of the City and High Heaton Libraries in their existing sites and the demolition of the Basil Spence City Library and rebuilding in a prominent city centre location. The iconic new buildings were officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.
