The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and Lancashire County Council Streetscape
As an organisation we lead both the feasibility and delivery of a £220m masterplan to transform the gateway where the University of Central Lancashire meets Preston City Centre, providing Project Management, NEC Contract advice, Cost Advisor and Health & Safety consultancy services.
Within this role there were a number of major highways transformations in the city to support the pedestrianisation, active travel, and footfall connectivity between the University and the City. It was also to manage traffic around the University and through to the city centre which was transformed in the 1960s and 70s into a modern town (it obtained city status in 2002).
The project included an innovative streetscape or street-scene using high quality materials that includes courtesy crossing, reduced street 'clutter’ (signage, road markings etc) widened pavements, greenery, and greater accessibility along a retained street. Our role leading the project meant that we needed to balance the needs of all users including pedestrians, cyclists and users of various disabilities, reduce vehicle speed, and improve flow.
AA Projects managed the engagement between Lancashire County Council, the University, inclusivity groups, commercial enterprises and the public to support the planning application of this progressive urban landscaping project.
